REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT The Cana...REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT The Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, created in 1991 supports and challenges dietitians to include research in their everyday practice. It has become a able-bodied entity because of continued corporate and DC member commitment and expertise. The Foundation provides support and resources in like manner more dietitians can establish research evidence for identification of client privations and decisions on service and performance delivery. This support also includes encouragement and mentoring opportunities for les experienced investigators. CFDR facilitates the communication of research initiatives to a broad cluster of stakeholders involved in decisions regarding victuals and nutrition message and service delivery Along with these opportunities arise the responsibility to support the Foundation. The Foundation focused forward several strategic initiatives in 1998 to fulfill its mission. ENHANCE FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR DIETETIC RESEARCH 1998 Grant Competition The amount of coin available in research grants from CFDR continues to shoot CFDR has identified four research directions to receive priority grant funding: outcome of nutrition interventions new approaches in meeting health urgencys of Canadians identification of vulnerable assemblages and their nutritional needs determinants of fodder choice In 1998, the Foundation provided a total of $50000 in grants to seven dietetic research contrives Special New Funds Announced for Consumer Research The Board of Directors decided that more knowledge was necessityed regarding determinants of consumer nourishment choice. Therefore, a new funding opportunity was announced with sum of two units key themes: developing, communicating and/or evaluating relevant nutrition messages for Canadian consumer identifying, understanding, and/or influencing factors that enable or hinder consumer in achieving healthy eating In the spring of 1999 the scheme to receive the grant will be culled FOSTER COMMUNICATION OF RESEARCH ends AND EXPERIENCES Wolfville Research Day CFDR armyed another successful Research Day as part of the national meeting of Dietitians of Canada in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Members participated in a half-day workshop upon research skills, which has subsequently been seated on the CFDR web site. Following this workshop, delegates could wander by the and of the maze of poster boards presenting research plans and discuss research experiences with their colleagues. Abstracts of 34 dietetic research devises were depicted in either a broadside or oral format. All abstracts have been subsequently published in the fall issue of the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research. Canadian Inventory of Dietetic Research Activities in Canada (CIDAR) CIDAR was officially launched on CFDR on the Dietitians of Canada web site in May. At the spring CFDR Donor Breakfast end corporate donors had an opportunity to view the functionality of this research database and were invited to begin using the inventory. CIDAR is a of the present day unique, online database that allows users to search for complet or underway dietetic research concocts in Canada. Users can search for research by the agency of topic, investigator or geography, can retrieve abstracts, and can add their allow research. Visit CIDAR at www.dietitians.ca/cfdrresearch CONTINUE TO BUILD THE ENDOWMENT store Corporate Pledges At the Donor Breakfast termination on May 8, CFDR announced the launch of a recently made known fundraising campaign. The goal is to raise $900000 in suretys from the corporate sector to build the endowment store so that the Foundation can sustain activities from interest accumulation. at December 1998, CFDR had raised throughout 50% of its goal. The corporate sector continues to demonstrate its support of research and the dietetic profession. CFDR and Dietitians of Canada are looking to enhance partnerships with the corporate sector to generate be in want ofed research knowledge, continuing professional progress to maturity skills, consumer resources and nutrition messages. CFDR and DC will anticipate to CFDR donors for partnership opportunities. Member Support Dietitians of Canada and its members also continue to financially support the Foundation. Individual members contributed in exces of $10000 in 1998 In addition, members have initiated pleasantry fundraising activities that raise the profile of the Foundation. Examples include golf tournaments in Ontario and Manitoba, and the silent auction in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research continues to expand and prosper. The synergy of exchanging support and benefits with individuals and organizations in the aliment and nutrition marketplace contributes significantly to the Foundation's increase and prosperity.
