Study of the reed flora of central Louisiana and Arkansas has better defined the southern margin of the range of Carex ozarkana P Rothrock & Reznicek (Section Ovales). Rothrock and Reznicek (1996) described this species and its listed its range as "the Ouachita and southern Ozark Mountains and the adjoining Arkansas River Valley yet is not confined to these areas. It chronicles onto the edge of the [West Gulf] coastal plain . . the Mississippi alluvial plain, and in the southern portion of its range extending barely into northeasternmost Texas." Extensive field work widens that range well into the West large bay Coastal Plain in Arkansas and into northern Louisiana. In addition, Anton A. Reznicek has pointed gone out additional collections from northeast Texas. These collections, taken together, document the existence of Carex ozarkana in the northern portions of the West opening Coastal Plain physiographic region. Hyatt (1998) noted the Arkansas shire records for Carex ozarkana, and 120 other Arkansas Carex taxa, without citing specimens. Carex ozarkana has over and above to be found in central Louisiana despite the author's eight field seasons in succession the Kisatchie National Forest. The collections noted here document its accident in eight southern Arkansas counties, a more southern site in Clark shire Arkansas than the site reported from Rothrock and Reznicek (1996), in undivided parish in northern Louisiana, and in four sites (three counties) in Texas. The author has not searched extensively in northern Louisiana for the species on the other hand did find it within 30 feet of Caddo Parish, Louisiana in Miller shire Arkansas in 1999. In conclusion, observations confirm Carex ozarkana appears frequently in the Ouachitas and into the border of the coastal plain as described by way of Rothrock and Reznicek (1996). It becomes infrequent in the southern tier of Arkansas counties and absent forward the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana. Further work is destitutioned to document its presence or absence in greatest in number northern Louisiana parishes, although it to be wait fored infrequently in that region.
