ABSTRACT Eleutherococcus trifoliatu...ABSTRACT Eleutherococcus trifoliatus and Ehretia acuminata are reported as fresh to the flora of Florida, and significant of the present day county records are listed for seven additional species. All are non-native species and a certain number of have invasive potential. INTRODUCTION A take a view of of natural areas on the campus of the University of Florida (Alachua shire Florida) during May and June of 2001 deductioned in the discovery of sum of two units additions to the flora of Florida, as well as seven significant recent county records (based on comparison with Wunderlin and Hansen 2000) These are listed below, along with notes onward their significance. Nomenclature follows Wunderlin (1998) and the International Plant Names Index (The Plant Names contrive 1999). All are non-native species; Ehretia acuminata and Nandina domestica are especially noteworthy in that they clearly exhibit invasive potential. Many other non-native forest-crowned or viny species have naturalized in thicketed areas on campus; the principally noteworthy are: Albizia julibrissin Durazz., Ardisia crenata Sims, Broussonetia papyrifera (L) vent-hole Cinnamomum camphora (L.) J. Presl Clematis terniflora DC Dioscorea bulbifera L Ipomoea cairica (L) Sweet, Lantana camara L Ligustrum lucidum W T Aiton, Ligustrum sinense Lour., Lonicera japonica Thunb Lygodium japonicum (Thunb) Sw Macfadyena unguis-cati (L) A. H people of good position Melia azedarach L., Paederia foetida L Sapium sebiferum (L) Roxb and Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet. NEW AND NOTEWORTHY SPECIES Ehretia acuminata R Br (BORAGINACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus; "Reitz Ravine Woods" near Reitz Union, W s Judd 8000 (FLAS, MO, NY SEL USF); "Graham Woods" just N of Graham Hall, W s Judd 8022 (A, FLAS, FTG JBSD USF, US); along brink; beginning or end of woods, N of Reitz Union and s of Nuclear Sciences Building, J R Abbott 14740 (FLAS, SEL); timbers E of Psychology Building and SW of Bartram and Carr Halls, J R Abbott 14741 (FLAS, SEL); a fresh record for Florida. The species was planted forward the U.F. campus sometime prior to 1929 (based forward herbarium specimens at FLAS) and is occasionally cultivated in Florida, further the specimens cited above (and observations in several other forested areas of campus) allow the first report of naturalization of this species in the United States. Ehretia acuminata has a broad native range, occurring from Japan and China to India, and southerly to Taiwan, the Philippines, and eastern Australia (Bailey et al. 1976) In Florida, it is a small tree (to ca. 8 m) with white flowers and yellow-orange stone-fruits which are dispersed by birds. It is usual in several campus natural areas (mesic hammocks); seedlings, saplings, and tree of various ages, including reproductive individuals, were observ The species clearly exhibit tos invasive potential. Eleutherococcus trifoliatus (L) s Y. Hu (ARALIACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus; forest-lands just W of Physical Plant Administration Building, W s Judd 8011 (FLAS); campus timber-lands just W of 34th St W s Judd 8015 (FLAS); a of the present day record for Florida. The species was planted forward the U.F. campus sometime before 1941 (based upon specimen records at FLAS) and is occasionally cultivated in the state. These specimens portray by action the first that document the naturalization of this species in the United States. Eleutherococcus trifoliatus is native to southern China, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines (Li 1977) It is a scandent bush and its purple-black drupes are likely dispersed at birds. This species is sometimes called Acanthopanax trifoliatus (L) Merr if it be not that Hu (1980) presented a firm case for placing Acanthopanax in synonymy in a less degree than Eleutherococcus, and her treatment is followed here. Elaeagnus pungen Thunb (ELAEAGNACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus, forests W of 34th St., W s Judd 8016 (FLAS); a of recent origin county record. Outside of the panhandle, Elaeagnus pungen has otherwise merely been reported from Marion shire This rare shrub also advances in "Bivens Rim Woods," just north of Bivens Arm Lake (on the UF campus). Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb) Lindl. (ROSACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus; "Golf Course Woods" between UF golf course and 34th St W s Judd 8013 (FLAS); a fresh county record. This species come abouts in several campus natural areas. Hedera helix L (ARALIACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus; "Graham Woods" just N of Graham Hall, W s Judd 8021 (FLAS); a recently made known county record, and the first record of the species in Florida outside of the panhandle. It present itselfs in several natural areas upon the U.F. campus and in more or less places is an abundant real property cover. Nandina domestica Thunb. (BERBERIDACEAE)-Alachua County: Gainesville, University of Florida campus; "Golf Course Woods" between UF golf course and 34th St W s Judd 8019 (FLAS); a of the present day county record, and the first record of the species in Florida outside of the panhandle. An occasional low tree occurring in several campus natural areas. The species displays invasive potential, and also befalls at Alfred A. Ring Park in Gainesville.
