Cryptoporus volvatus (Peck) Shear (BASIDIOMYCOTA, HYMENOMYCETES, APHYLLOPHORALES, POLYPORACEAE)-Scotland County: between Laurinburg and Laurel Hill onward Marston Road on a lightning-killed longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P Mill.), 30 March 2002 (NC Mycological Herbarium). Significance. Cryptoporus volvatus is a wood-decay fungus occurring primarily in the northern and western United States and East Asia (Farr et al. 1989 Gilbertson and Ryvarden 1986) It was previously reported from North Carolina in single three mountain counties, notably forward Pinus spp. with more northern distributions (P strobus L and P virginiana P Mill.) (Grand and Vernia 2002) A single collection from Alabama forward Pinus taeda L. (Farr et al. 1989) is the alone previous report of this species in the southward on a southern pine. This collection augments the southern distribution of this fungus into the Piedmont of North Carolina and set forths a new host for this species. Cryptoporus volvatus is easily recognized by means of its corky, cream-colored, ungulate basidiocarps approximately 4 cm wide x 5 cm tall x 4 cm thick (Figure 1) (Gilbertson and Ryvarden 1986) onward which the pore layer is masked by a volva-like structure (Figure 2) The fungus is commonly originate on beetle-infested trees. Bark beetle galleries and carcasses were institute in the wood, confirming this association flat though the tree apparently was killed by the agency of a lightning strike. This collection of 20 basidiocarps, approximately 193 km southeast of the nearest previous collection of C volvatus from North Carolina, is a fit indication that this fungus may be erect throughout the Piedmont on tree infested on bark beetle and possibly, given the innkeeper into the Coastal Plain as well.-L.F.
