Aneura pinguis (L) Dumort. Significance. These collections form the basis of the first published report of this otherwise widely distributed taxon for southward Carolina. Schuster (1992, p. 558) characterizes the global distribution as "cosmopolitan or virtually so" In eastern North America it is known from the Arctic to Florida. Other, earlier collections from southerly Carolina, not previously reported are: Berkeley shire H.W. Ravenel 98, Santee Canal (NY); Colleton shire E.C. Taylor 2661, 14 December 1961 wet bank in shallow ravine, Givhans Ferry State Park (NY) The personality of Nelson 17019 and 18545 in coastal plain settings is consistent with the earlier collections.

Aneura pinguis is taxonomically similar to A. maxima (see below), and according to Schuster (1992 p 555) differs from A. maxima in lacking "any trace of discernible unistratose wings." Aneura maxima typically possesse unistratose thallus wings for up to 15 or more small room rows, or occasionally "for utterly 5 cell rows" or, forward portions of the thallus where margins are tumid, lacking any unistratose border (Schuster 1992 p 572) Others allow Aneura pinguis to posses unistratose wings up to 10 lonely dwellings wide (Paton 1999, Miller 2002) Miller (2002) attempts to separate the sum of two units on the basis of (in A. maxima): the stronger increase of unistratose wings (10-20 solitary abode; squalids wide); the more sharply defined, narrower, thickened midthallus region; and the more regularly lobate thallus margins. Additional contemplation is needed to clarify the specific distinctions, if any, between A. maxima and A. pinguis.

Davison & B Dellinger 2422 2432 2478 (USCH); 10 August 1995 PO Davison 3418 (USCH). all specimens above posses well-developed thallus wings unistratose for 10 or more small cavity rows. An additional specimen from Pickens shire [wet rock, cliff base onward trail to Mill Creek Falls, Table strength State Park, 11 August 1995 PG Davison 3436 (UNAF)] is presumably referable to Aneura maxima further the unistratose wings are poorly expanded at best up to eight lonely dwellings wide.

Significance. These are the first published reports for this taxon in southern Carolina. The global distribution includes Japan, Indonesia, strange Caledonia, India (all fide Schuster 1992) Belgium (Andriessen et al. 1995) Finland (Frahm 1997) and France (Sotiaux and Sotiaux 1996) Miller (2002) freshly reported the species new for Maine. The published North American distribution also includes Vermont of recent origin York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Tennessee North Carolina, and Louisiana (Inoue and Miller 1985 Reese and Waters 1987 all reported as the synonym A. sharpii Inoue and Miller).
