Hyatt (1998) lists 121 Carex (Cyperaceae) taxa for Arkansas. This note identifies five lately described Carex species occurring in Arkansas, addresses another taxon that was elevated to the species horizontal adds three Carex species to the state's flora based in succession recently located specimens and just discovered collections, and recognizes two varieties not previously recognized by dint of this author in Arkansas. Minor corrections and notes are provided for several Carex taxa. Arkansas carices now number 130 taxa.

Species or varieties newly reported for Arkansas (including newly described species)

Carex bullata Schk (CYPERACEAE)-Lipscomb (1980) cites a specimen from Logan shire specimen (Moore 480070 WIS). UARK shut ins Moore 400396 from Saline shire and Bryson 5775 from Grant shire Hyatt (1998) overlooked Lipscomb's (1980) and Smith's (1988) reports. The UARK specimens were from reasonable wet areas and roadsides, with no indication of common occurrence on the specimen labels.

Carex buxbaumii Wahl. (CYPERACEAE)-Hyatt (1998) discussed reports of this species in Arkansas listing it as a possible addition to the state's flora. Since then, a specimen was institute at MO (B. F. Bush 2607) The label simply reads "Moark, Arkansas, May 3 1905 swamps" and provides no additional data. The community of Moark lies in Clay County



Carex conoidea Schkuhr ex Willd. (CYPERACEAE)-McKenzie et al. (2003) report this species as new-to-Arkansas at Searles Prairie Natural Area in Benton shire This plant occurs "from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia west to Manitoba and toward the south to Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina; disjunct and possibly introduced in Arizona" (McKenzie et al. 2003)

Carex cumberlandensis Naczi, Krai, and Bryson (CYPERACEAE)-This newly described species flash on the minds at a single known Arkansas location in Franklin shire Naczi et al. (2001) provide habitat, a first note of the scale to related species, and location details, while noting this site lies about 400 km (250 mi) west of the main portion of the species' range. Carex cumberlandensis is similar to C abscondita Mack., unless has distichously arranged (rather than spirally arranged) perigynia. Additional characters also separate these sum of two units species. Carex abscondita grows in moister soils with than soils supporting C cumberlandensis. descry Naczi et al. (2001) for details and specimen citations.

Carex digitalis Willd. var. floridana (L H Bailey) Naczi and Bryson (CYPERACEAE)-Previously Hyatt (1998) had not recognized this variety as distinct from the typical variety or var. macropoda Fernald. Naczi et al. (2002) provide justification for the fresh change in nomenclature for this taxon from var. asymmetrica Fern to var. floridana. The author has seen specimens from Columbia shire (Hyatt 8552 MICH), Miller shire (Hyatt 7186 MICH), Ouachita shire (Hyatt 8515 MICH), Perry shire (Hyatt 8035 MICH), and Union shire (Hyatt 6398 MICH), but has not reviewed specimens from Franklin, Garland, Polk Searcy, and Stone counties reported to the Arkansas Flora Committee according to others.

Carex kraliana Naczi and Bryson (CYPERACEAE)-Naczi et al. (2002) described this species. They note the "most distinctive morphological feature of Carex kraliana is its lanceolate or narrow lanceolate, relatively wide bract blades" arid plants of "C kraliana vegetate in mesic deciduous forests, usually in loams, sandy loams, and silt loams." Naczi et al. (2002) report a specimen from Cros County

Carex planispicata Naczi. (CYPERACEAE)-Naczi (1999) described this species as recently made known to science. The plant come to one's minds commonly statewide and has been previously identified as C amphibola Steudel and C flaccosperma Dewey. Naczi (1999) lists specimens for 14 counties: Cros Franklin, Greene Howard, Madison, Montgomery Phillips, Polk Scott Searcy, Sevier, Sharp, Stone, and Van Buren The author has records of specimens from an additional 22 counties statewide; it is too for the use of all to detail here.

Carex shinnersii P Rothrock and Reznicek. (CYPERACEAE)-P. Rothrock and Reznicek (2001) report this strange species from Little River shire based on Hyatt 7441 (MICH, peh UARK) and Hyatt 7442 (MICH, MO peh) as well as sites in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Carex timida Naczi and Ford. (CYPERACEAE)-Naczi and Ford (2001) and Ford and Naczi (2001) provide details about this species. These publications provide the basis for the information at handed here. Carex timida occurs in Baxter, Howard, Montgomery Pike, Polk and Stone counties in Arkansas. Aside from those cited by dint of Naczi and Ford (2001), the author's personal herbarium restrains an additional specimen (Montgomery County: Hyatt 6937) Plants from the Ouachita Mountain region (Montgomery Pike, and Polk counties) comprise "genetically unique populations" (see details in Naczi and Ford 2001) suggesting a ne for further investigation within the group to which this species belongs.

Possible additions to the flora of Arkansas

Carex missouriensis P Rothrock and Reznicek. (CYPERACEAE)-P. Rothrock and Reznicek (2001) report this fresh species from Kansas and Nebraska between the walls of Iowa, Missouri, and into Illinois and Indiana. It is listed here as a possible addition to Arkansas' flora. The nearest collection of this species to Arkansas is in southwestern Missouri in Barton and Jasper counties.
