Significance. The above collection portrays the first documentation of this species for Alabama and the third reported location in the coastal plain toward the south of North Carolina. This boreal fen and fen species has previously been reported from disjunct locations in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States in Berkeley shire South Carolina and the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia (McMillan et al. 2002) An steady more isolated population is known from the summit of El Yunque (1050 m) in Puerto Rico (Gale 1944)

The above-cited collection was originally labeled Rhynchospora macra (Clarke) Small, which is typical of seepage inclines in the Gulf coastal plain region. finish inspection of the specimen exhibits that the achene bodies are consistently les than 21 mm in continuance and less than 1.3 mm in width. The specimen also displays 9 perianth bristles per achene, too scarcely any for Rhynchospora macra which typically displays 16-25 bristles.

Mohr (1901) lists Rhynchospora alba from Alabama, yet the attribution is based on collections of Rhynchospora macra made prior to the description of the latter species (C Mohr 1731 UNA).
