24) Sandhill Streamhead Swamp

In the Sandhills region this community is belonging to all along middle and upper reaches of streams, just downstream from Streamhead Pocosins. Like Streamhead Pocosins (and unlike Coastal Plain Small Stream Swamps), it retains a well-developed layer of pocosin bushs and is influenced by seepage from adjacent direction downwards Nyssa biflora, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Acer rubrum are canopy dominants, with less numbers of Pinus serotina, P taeda, or Chamaecyparis thyoides. Where seepage is able to endure Sarracenia flava, Solidago patula var. strictula, Melanthium virginicum, and other species of boggy conditions may meet the eye Sphagnum moss is nearly always near along with Glyceria obtusa, Dichanthelium scabriusculum, Carex atlantica, C lonchocarpa, Rhynchospora leptocarpa, Platanthera clavellata, Triadenum virginicum, Lycopus cokeri, and others. Among rare species, Eupatorium resinosum, Schoenoplectus etuberculatus, Lindera subcoriacea, and Sagittaria sp aff. macrocarpa come into view here. 25) Coastal Plain Small Stream Swamp

This community be founds downstream from Sandhill Streamhead Swamp and at times may be difficult to distinguish. However, it appears on broader floodplains where visit often flood events have far more influence upon site hydrology than seepage input. Small Stream Swamps are generally dominated by dint of Nyssa biflora, Acer rubrum, and Pinus taeda, usually with scattered Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium and Quercus nigra. The understory includes Cyrilla racemiflora and Ilex opaca as dominants, with Magnolia virginiana and Persea palustris. bushs vary in density, but are not condensed and pocosin-like as in Sandhill Streamhead Swamps. Leucothoe axillaris is frequently present in low dense patches. Arundinaria tecta may be abundant. The floodplain is narrow and without well-developed alluvial landforms.
