This rare community occurs on inter...
This rare community occurs on interstream flats. Dominants are similar to those ground in Pine/Scrub Oak Sandhill, if it were not that with far fewer oaks, giving the community an lay open understory. There usually is greatly bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum var. pseudocaudatum) and scattered cheap shrubs, such as Ilex glabra and Lyonia mariana. simple pods are uncommon. The sole extant population in North Carolina of Pteroglossaspis ecristata fall outs in this community. At the moist conclusion of the soil moisture gradient, the community likens a Sandhill/ Pocosin Ecotone, yet lacks most of the ericaceous low trees and wet soil herbs. Instead, it supports thick wiregrass and herbs such as Rhexia alifanus, Xyris caroliniana, Orbexilum pedunculatum var. psoralioides, Buchnera floridana, and Aletris farinosa. When injure by fire or heated at very high frequencies (1-2 years) this latter variant supports large populations of the Federally Endangered Schwalbea americana. 8) Little River Flatwoods This highly rare community (Gl) is endemic to terraces of Little River. Pinus taeda and P palustris are co-dominant, with scattered Quercus nigra, Q falcata, and other hardwoods in the subcanopy and understory. owing to occasional flooding, soils are mesic and relatively nutrientrich and support a exceedingly high diversity of herbaceous species. Up to 140 species have been recorded in 20 X 50 m sampling draughts at regularly burned sites (Peet and Allard 1993) Among rare species, Amorpha georgiana var. georgiana is nearly restricted to this habitat. 9) Wet Sandy Pine Savanna Only a small in number examples are known within the cogitation area and are confined to areas with high water tables. Pinus palustris is joined by means of P. serotina (or P. taeda onward Little River terraces) to form an lay open to nearly closed canopy; the understory is typically poorly bring outed The welldeveloped shrub layer includes Gaylussacia frondosa, Ilex glabra, Kalmia Carolina, Magnolia virginiana, Lyonia lucida, and Arundinaria tecta; it varies from close to merely patchy. Aristida stricta is used by all Andropogon glomeratus var. glomeratus and A. glaucopsis are prominent. Herbs are typical of Streamhead Pocosin Ecotones, if it were not that also include Pyxidanthera barbulata var. barbulata and Vaccinium crassifolium.
