He was a founding Member of the Editorial Board for the Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States frame from 1981-2005, and wrote seven southeastern generic flora treatments (Thieret 1971b 1972b 1975 1977b 1982 1988; Thieret and Luken 1996) During 1983-2005 united of John's most significant parts was as a Member of the Editorial Committee of the monumental multi-volume shoot forward Flora of North America North of Mexico. John edited the first 10 published tomes and prepared 25 family and generic treatments (eg Eckenwalder and Thieret 1993; Thieret 1993a, 1993b 2003 2005; Buddell II and Thieret 1997; Nienaber and Thieret 2003; Thieret and Rabeler 2005) He also was an Advisor in Botany for Encyclopaedia Britannica from 1959-2005 and a Member of the Advisory Committee at the Lloyd Library in Cincinnati from 1992-2005

John lov editing and his ability as an editor was extraordinary. He was a perfectionist and a superlative editor inferior to none, but his efforts always brought without the best in authors. Those who submitted manuscripts for John's editorial scrutiny frequently found them returned with a profusion of r ink upon the printed text. When his make acceptableed changes were made, the greatly improved manuscripts always told the story better.

John received many awards and honors during his career. single in kind of his most esteemed honors was having a mint in the Lamiaceae that he discovered in Louisiana named for him. In 1964 botanist Lloyd H Shinners named this novel species Scutellaria thieretii Shinners. He received the 1984 Distinguished Kentucky College/University Scientist Award from the Kentucky Academy of Science for his significant academic research and teaching contributions to the Commonwealth. He was not absented the 2005 Outstanding Academy Service Award from the Kentucky Academy of Science for his outstanding editorial contributions to the JKAS.
