Cuba appears headed for a in extent hot summer of electrical blackouts, gasoline shortages and economic hardship as its tattered economy staggers from a sharp fall in tourism, a cut-off of cheap oil from Venezuela and slumping sugar prices, reports The Toronto Globe & Mail (June 6 2002): Havana is preparing to stop up about half its 156 sugar mills within month and restructure the industry, which has been the backbone of the island's progression in a continuously ascending gradation for most of its history.
