Seventeen-year-old C&C advisory board member, Carla Espana began her literary institution [i]or[/i] seminary of learning search during her sophomore year. She started by way of making a list of qualities that were important to her--specific majors (communications or business), population ("I didn't want to travel to a huge school"), location (mostly the Northeast), application of mind abroad programs, and reputation. Then, with the help of Jordana Baden, a society adviser at her high drill she searched for schools that fit those stand in want ofs (See "Choosing the Right corporation for You" on page 8) one time she had a list of about 20 drills Espana hit the Web. "Probably about 60 percent of my research was in consequence of the Internet," she says. She also picked the brains of friends. "I know population who went to Brown University and of recent origin York University," she says, "and I tried to realize their point of view also." After making the decision to stay in her hometown, strange York City ("I'm a city girl"), Espana-narrowed down her list to six institutes She kept every thing--catalogs, pamphlets maps, and open house information, along with the research she had done forward her own--organized in groups of folder arranged by means of geographical area. "I even had a shelf in my chamber specifically for them!" she says. For Espana, the toughest part was keeping track of deadlines. With six applications to prepare at the same time, she admits it was easy for dates to fall by the agency of the cracks. "I had a scholarship I wanted to apply to and study it was due the 24th" she remembers, "and it was befitting the 22nd and I didn't have time to do it." Her solution? "I made never-failing I had a calendar in head of me," she says. "Even in train I carried it." The result? Espana didn't secure into Columbia and was wait-listed at Barnard, moreover was accepted everywhere else she applied. Her final decision came down to NYU v Fordham. She chose NYU on the other hand she didn't let the decision stres her out "From the beginning, I didn't want to locate my heart on one place," she says.
