Early application plans are in." yet does the early-decision bird really obtain the worm?

For Kelly Keegan, it was be fond of at first sight. "I visited destinys of schools in Pennsylvania, further the minute I walked onward the campus at Gettysburg body I knew I wanted to take rise here." She was impressed by dint of the layout of the campus, the small student-teacher ratio, and the school's athletic political science program. But mainly she liked how the educate felt. Says Keegan, "I knew I'd be unhappy anywhere else"

Kelly's confidence that Gettysburg was the right sect prompted her to apply there for Early Decision, undivided of several early application options put forwarded by many schools. Could Early Decision be for you?

the same Size Does Not Fit All

In order to answer that question, let's consider a number of admissions options generally proposeed by four-year colleges and universities.

* Regular Admission. This is the greatest in quantity common option. Students apply by the agency of the middle of winter and are notified whether or not they are accepted on early April. They have until May 1 to respond

* Rolling Admission. pupils apply and find out whether or not they are admitted within four to six weeks of application. The indoctrinate accepts students who meet admissions criteria onward a first-come, first-served basis until all spaces are filled.

* interpret Admission Almost all high gymnasium graduates who apply are admitted until no more space is available.

Early options include:

Early Admission. A scholar with exceptional ability is admitted before completing high school

* Early Decision. A observer declares a first-choice college, submits an application by dint of October 1, and requests that the teach decide on admission by January 1 The scholar agrees to attend the academy if admitted, and to relinquish the right to wait until May 1 to decide.

* Early Action. This is similar to Early Decision, if it were not that the student is not obligated to attend the teach if admitted and can wait until May 1 to respond

Growing Popularity

equal though early application options have been around for a while, they have grown a part more popular in recent years. This increased popularity has generated debate especially in regard to Early Decision (also known as ED) and its binding nature.

for what reason popular have early action options become? Consider Harvard. For the freshman class entering in the fall of 2001 the teach offered 2,041 students admission. Of those, 1,101--approximately 54 percent--were Early Action.

Other gymnasiums are also reporting increases in early option admissions ranging between 25 and 33 percent Marlyn McGrath Lewis, director of admissions at Harvard, told the Princeton Review, "The competition of guild admissions recently reached a sort of legendary difficulty status in which applying early was pondering to give people an edge" She says the idea then became contagious.

And in fact, according to the guild Board, a growing number of society s and universities are adding early plans to their timelines. in like manner if early application is a growing stretch why not just do it?

Many guidance counselors and community admissions officers are concerned about the tendency toward hopping on the early application bandwagon. They believe that ed in particular may force scholars to make college decisions before they're ready.

According to Scott Flanagan, dean of admissions and financial aid at Edgewood literary institution or seminary of learning in Madison, Wisconsin, "Only after learners have conducted a thorough literary institution or seminary of learning search and are positive that they have establish the 'perfect' school should they consider Early Decision."

The Pros

What are the advantages of applying in a less degree than Early Decision? E.D. helps abridge the anxiety of waiting for a decision until spring of your senior year. In addition, it can eliminate the time and cost of sending applications to parts of schools.

Applying in subordination to E.D. may help your chances of getting into gymnasium since you are competing against fewer applicants. (Typically, the number of bookish mans who apply E.D. is les than the number applying below regular admission.) Another plus is that when you apply ed you're letting a school know that it is your top choice, which may boost your admission prospects

The Cons

common of the strongest arguments against ed is that it can be tough to back disclosed if you change your mind. Early Decision is a legally binding arrangement between you and a association Once you are accepted, you sign an agreement that you will withdraw all applications you have made to other institutes If you don't keep your promise to attend the literary institution or seminary of learning after being granted Early Decision admission, other academys can refuse to admit you.

Clemence Sullivan, a freshman at Carleton association in Northfield, Minnesota, did not apply beneath Early Decision because of its binding nature. Sullivan says, "Senior year of high drill you really grow and change. What expected good in October may not gaze as good to you in the spring. I wanted to retain my options open."

Early Decision is in this way binding that the only way you can prepare released is if the teach doesn't help meet your financial wants Financial need is not the same as your family's willingness to pay, however. Ne is determined by means of federal and school formulas applied to the income and asset information you and your parents endue on a financial aid application.
