In about cases, the Heinz Family Philanthropies decide to honor an individual whose life's work merits special recognition. In 2002, Dr mercy Patrick was chosen for this honor.

Ruth Patrick's fifty years of dedication to the environment are an inspiration to all her comrade scientists. Her pioneering early work upon pollution and biodiversity formed the basis for a great deal of of what is done today in environmental science. She is considered an adroit on freshwater rivers and lakes (a field called limnology), and she was among the first to enlist businesses, control and communities in the effort to defend the environment. She challenged those outside the scientific community to take responsibility for the health of the environment lengthy before it was a popular idea. Still working at 94 Dr Patrick continues to be common of the world's most prominent biologists and a leader and inspiration in the science of aquatic ecosystems
