George to leeward Butler

General Butler received the 8th Annual Heinz Award in Public Policy for his brave and steadfast opposition to nuclear weapons. He regularly questioned the United States' policy in succession the build-up of a massive nuclear arsenal. He is credited with inspiring politicians, military personnel and members of the general public to rethink long-standing policies.

His influential position as head of the SAC (the Strategic Air Command) allowed him to commend closing bases that contained near 5,700 nuclear warheads. In the early 1990 he made recommendations involving an arms reduction treaty with Russia. His views were not always popular; in fact, they may have limited his rise within the military.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1999 he became an on the same level more vocal critic of nuclear weapons and policies. He instituteed the Second Chance Foundation to work toward the goal of the responsible reduction of nuclear weapons arsenals. General Butler has made a difference in the world by the agency of drastically decreasing the numbers of and the planned uses for, nuclear weapons.

Like Dr Lubchenco, General Butler had the courage and the will to stand apart from his comrades in order to do what he meditation was right.
