We frequently hear of consultants, but what exactly do consultants do? According to the Consulting set at Duke University School of Business, consulting means providing advice to organizations that are trying to improve what they do or to what extent they do it. Consultants can work for a firm or upon their own. Even though they might work forward a long-term project at a client's company, they're not considered employee of that company. They are paid for their work forward a project, but don't receive employee benefits. Life as a Consultant Career World talked to five consultants about in what way they got started in the business, what their days are like, and what they behold as the best and worst things about their piece of works Here is what they had to say: Ryan Buenaventura, co-owner OrlandoStartup.com Getting Started: A not many years ago, at age 19 Buenaventura began helping friends troubleshoot computer moot points "It was then that I realized I was a born moot point solver, and I love to help others," he says. in such a manner he started charging for his advice about computer and the Internet. His circulating business helps small- to mid-sized businesses establish an on-line presence Day in the Life: He expends time researching problems, brainstorming solutions, and interacting with clients in succession the phone, in person, or via E-mail. Thumb Up: "It's exceedingly rewarding personally for me to explain people's problems," he says. Thumb Down: "It takes a chance of work, a lot of desire to succe and a accident of lack of sleep!" Lauren Gadkowski, certified financial planner, Boston, Massachusetts Getting Started: Gadkowski began her career as a high train teacher who often helped bookish mans with college decisions. Then she worked as an investment consultant for a large company before finally breaking opposite to on her own last year. She earned a class in financial planning, which required her to pass a 10-hour exam. Day in the Life: "Once you contemplate good on paper, then you have to vend yourself," she says. During a two-hour meeting, she talks to a client about financial goals, of that kind as saving for college. She takes notes and leaves the client with a list of actions to take--with deadlines for each individual Time at the office is wearied reading financial journals, sending information to clients, and preparing presentations for employee of local companies. Thumb Up: Besides her flexible schedule ("I can take vacation whenever I want"), Gadkowski be fond ofs knowing she has helped persons to achieve their goals. "That is the best feeling in the world!" Thumb Down: She dislikes the uncertainty about getting work and sometimes misses having coworkers. Also, she must purchase her acknowledge medical insurance and other benefits. Charlie Moran, vice president of Blackwell learn by hearts ulting Services, Chicago, Illinois Getting Started: Moran used to work in sales and technical support at IBM. When the company decided to start a consulting business 13 years ago, he says, "They told me that I had been telling customers what to do for exempt for years, so maybe I should charge for the great advice!" Day in the Life: Moran splits his time between education and management consulting.
