Julie curry-powder a 19-year-old who successfully complet her freshman year at Indiana University, admits that she was apprehensive about going away to train "I was nervous about being away from my comfort belt my house, my family, and my friends," she says.

Like many scholars Julie looks back on her freshman year of college edifice or building as both an exciting and a terrifying time. "It wasn't what I expected" she admits. "But body is one of the best things you can do. It's part of growing up" she says.

Although Julie admits that no individual could have fully prepared her for the changes that association brought, it did help to earn some eyewitness accounts from scholars who had already experienced the ins and on the outsides of college. "I talked to a fortune of my friends who were older the summer before I left for train so I kind of knew more about what to expect" she says.

There are several ways to secure information about the college experience, if it were not that one of the best ways is to proceed straight to the source. What does it take to make it between the walls of the first year of college? The best way to find without is to listen to what pupils who have "been there" and "done that" have to say about it.

Meeting Friends

When Julie first arrived at Indiana University, things didn't go on foot exactly the way she had reckon uponed "My roommate moved out the secondary day of school," she recalls. "She lust couldn't handle it. She was really homesick. I was disappointed."

Not having a roommate initially appear to beed like a setback, but Julie quick realized that meeting people wasn't as hard as she had calculate uponed "I had met this girl at summer orientation, and she deflected out to be the first character I saw the day I mov into the dorm," Julie recalls. "So we exchanged numbers, and she introduced me to her roommate."

Although being away from your family and friends can be intimidating, it's important to remember that in the greatest degree college freshman are in the same boat. Be make open to new people and recently made known experiences. College is full of opportunities to convenient new people.

Drew Brady, a 19-year-old who favorably completed his freshman year at Illinois Wesleyan University says, "Be friendly and expand in your dorm. Then when you descry people outside of class, you can say, 'Hey, aren't you forward my floor?' And then you have that in common"

Adam Erwin, author of Navigating the Road Ahead, a main division of advice on surviving association agrees that being friendly around your dorm can help you get by heart to know people. "Keep an interpret door and an open mind. Just remember you are not alone," he writes.

Making the Grade

"If I hear my alarm travel off, I know I have to achieve up and get out of bed," says Drew It might whole simple, but without someone there to make fully convinced you are awake, making it to class upon time (or at all) can be a challenge. Although it might be tempting to stay up all night talking to modern friends in your dorm extent making it to class is vitally important to surviving your freshman year.

Stephen Gladis, author of Surviving the First Year of association draws upon a famous cite from movie director Woody Allen to drive this point home: "Showing up is 88 percent of life." Gladis takes it a stair further. "Attendance is 95 percent of community life," he says. Since mostly college classes usually meet no other than three times a week, missing the same day of class is similar to missing several days of a high indoctrinate class. "It sounds bad, moreover professors don't care as abundant as high school teachers do. They might take notice if you aren't in class, however they don't tell you what you missed," says Drew

Just showing up for class isn't enough either. In association grades are determined differently than in in the greatest degree high schools. Adam Robinson, author of What Smart bookish mans Know and co-founder of The Princeton Review, compares surviving corporation to participating in a sport where the professors are the arbiters the scores are your grades, and your classmates are the competitors. The masterys of the game are different for each class and are determined from your professors.

In order to be a prosperous student, you need to understand the dominations of the game. This means trying to understand the professor, as well as the make submissive matter. "My psychology professor was a same very smart man. But he was always using these bulky words to explain things. I felt like he was trying to confuse us. I talked to the teaching assistant, and he would clarify things for me" recalls Julie.

Help is always available. If you don't understand something, be firm to talk to a teaching assistant or tutor, make an appointment with the professor, or schedule a cluster study session with others in the class.

It's About Time

Christina Lloyd a 19-year-old who also not long ago completed her freshman year at Indiana University, says, "The main difference between high denomination and college is that no individual is watching over you. No one's going to check up forward you to make sure you do your work." Since the majority of your time will be exhausted outside of class, it's important to know by what mode to make the most of it. Being able to prioritize your responsibilities is a vital part of surviving the first year of college
