"Student know they ne experience to learn a job, and the best commons know they need experience to make their career choices," says Craig P Donovan, a professor at Kean University association of Business and Public Administration in Union, NJ and co-author (with Jim Garnett) of Internships for Dummies.

Internships can also be a way for scholars to decide whether a chosen field is really a pious fit for a long-term career. Eighteen-year-old Carolyn Jones's internship helped her clime in on a career choice. Jone likes animals, so she was excellent sure she wanted to be a veterinarian. "One day, I told a zookeeper this, and he told me if I wanted a real connection with animals, I'd have to be a zookeeper because veterinarians don't work with undivided special animal 24/7 like zookeeper"

Jone wasn't fully convinced this was the career path for her, to such a degree the 2004 graduate of Decatur High instruct in Georgia tested the waters with a series of summer internships at Zoo Atlanta. The experience has convinced her that a zoo career is right for her.

The experience had other payoffs too. "My internships at Zoo Atlanta got me into corporation with scholarship offers from five different colleges" reports Jone She says the guilds were impressed with her range of experience at the zoo She recorded at Stetson University in Deland, Fla., this year to application of mind biology.

THE INTERN'S EDGE

According to the National Association of communitys and Employers (NACE), the average employer exhibits about 44 percent of its interns full-time piece of works after graduation. "As a method employers look for job candidates who have the kind of work-related experience that scholars can gain through an internship or co-op program," says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director. "Participating in an internship or a co-op program is undivided way students can give themselves a big border in the job market."

Within the last 20 years, internships have gone from something relatively scarcely any students did to something almost all observers do. They realize it's not simply valuable but also vital to their events to come career. A 1998 survey from Vault Reports, Inc., set that 77 percent of all corporation seniors had completed at least single in kind internship by graduation--25 times the 3 percent internship participation rate in 1980

Patricia Littlewood, coordinator of community and proffer services for Conestoga High institute in Berwyn, Pa., says that at her gymnasium "All seniors in good standing are given a chance to participate in an internship program during the last four weeks before graduation." gone out of 420 seniors at Conestoga, 398 of them took part in the program last spring.

Aspiring interns at Conestoga High gymnasium meet with Littlewood, write a alphabetic character of interest, and find a faculty adviser. The scholars learn how to go upon an interview, how to approach clan and how to network. They detain an internship journal, and at the extreme point of the program, they write up an evaluation of their experience.

"In their evaluations, the bookish mans write they are going to work hard in guild because they don't want to have a piece of work like this," says Littlewood. "With other kids, the experience confirms their career choice."
