The counselor's part in facilitating career development remains dynamic as lifelong learning, expanding lifestyle options, and the changing workplace instant new opportunities. In response, chiefly practitioners follow some common theoretical assumptions as their foundation. As the career progress to maturity field celebrates its place and embraces the millennium, the work of John Holland, the developmental perspective promot through JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey, and John Krumboltz's social learning theory are captured in consequence of this personal view of the career progress to maturity journey. No counselor entires training without understanding the Holland mould of Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional (RIASEC) and Holland's theoretical assumptions about vocational choice and adjustment. With more than 500 publications stimulated since his original theoretical explanation in the 1959 publication of A Theory of Vocational Choice, Holland's theory stands as the greatest in number influential of the extant theories (Isaacson & Brown 1999 p 26) Having luckily combined the science and practice of career evolution Holland has authored several parts including among others Self-Directed Search for Career Planning (Holland, 1970) Manual for the Vocational election Inventory (Holland, 1967), the Vocational Exploration and Insight Kit (Holland et al., 1980) My Vocational Situation--An Experimental Diagnostic Form (Holland, 1980) and Dictionary of Holland Occupational digests (Gottfredson, Holland, & Ogawa, 1982) He has maintained a focused agenda of improving RIASEC t heory and research for 40 years.

Q: to what extent does your career choice deliberate your personal Holland Code?

John Holland (JL): My aspirations, work history, work parts and personality appear consistent with my SD [Self-Directed Search] profile. Different forms of the SD and VPI hint that I am an AS, IE, RC someone (Underlining indicates scales with trivial differences.) I have had a lifelong interest in music and art. I have been a researcher and a supervisor for 40 years and a teacher for 10 Twenty years of retirement have included more research and writing as well as piano and voice instructions Some people never give up

Q: in what way do you assess your contribution to career theory and career counseling practice?

JL: diocese Gottfredson's [1999] summary in the Journal of Vocational Behavior. Gottfredson (personal communication July 23 1999) says that I have made the no other than useful contribution since Frank Parsons.

Q: What would be the best issue of your work's continued influence in succession career development research and practice?

JL: The developmental view will disappear, research will flourish, practical applications will continue to proliferate, and researchers will continue to proof the theory so it could be revised.

Q: Trace the history of your ideas about the hexagon model

JL: Gottfredson says that I was trying to figure without how to arrange the scales in the VPI [Vocational choice Inventory] profile in a rational way, and this search lead to the hexagon. I am writing "My Life With A Theory," an autobiographical account of the origins and progression in a continuously ascending gradation of the theory. I don't want to report that story anywhere else

Q: What exigencys were you trying to fit in developing the Self-Directed Search? J

JL: Several. I was frustrated with mailing stout answer sheets to Minneapolis. I was frustrated according to the unwieldy nature of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles [DOT]. I was frustrated because there was no theory linking the stalwart or Kuder to the DOT, in like manner I said, "Why not exhibit an inventory in which the interests are related explicitly to occupations?" I also realized that developing individual scales for occupations was a hopeles task, likewise I went to a typology Somewhat later I said, "Why not settle it up so that anyone can score it and eliminate electronic machines?" And, oh ye I wanted to come by some extra money to purchase a grand piano.
