The authors summarize the career co...

The authors summarize the career counseling and unravelling literature that appeared during 2000 in refere journals, work chapters, and full-length books. The review of literature is divided into 5 major categories: (a) theoretical and conceptual advances, (b) career counseling and unfolding of identified populations, (c) assessment in career counseling and disentanglement (d) career counseling programs and interventions, and (e) resources for the professional growth of career counselors and vocational psychologists.

We have always admired and appreciated the time, animation and effort that authors of The Career progressive growth Quarterly annual review have dissipateed to provide readers with a comprehensive, nevertheless succinct, summary of literature. After completing the task of writing this year's review, we have bring outed an increased awareness regarding the various challenges associated with the preparation of an article that attempts to summarize an entire year's worth of published literature in a particular field.

Our review of practice and research in career counseling and progress to maturity for 2000 includes a review of relevant articles that appeared in our field's primary journals, including The Career unravelling Quarterly, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Career exhibition and the Career Planning and Adult progress to maturity Journal, as well as in journals that are central to the practice of counseling (eg the Journal of Counseling & unravelling Journal of Counseling Psychology, and The Counseling Psychologist). To make secure that our review of articles in these journals was exhaustive, we leadershiped hand searches (i.e., manual searches) of each issue of these journals published during 2000 rather than relying upon the electronic database search bodys that are typically used to obtain a list of relevant articles. Similarly, we escorted manual searches of several other journals that periodically include articles of relevance to career progressive growth practitioners and vocational psychologists. We made a particular effor t to leadership searches of international journals and journals that many career counselors and vocational psychologists attend to not to read on a regular basis. Finally, in an effort to locate other publications from 2000 that have particular relevance to career counseling and increase we conducted ERIC and PsycINFO database searches using the clew terms career and vocational (for the ERIC search) and the enslave headings career development and occupational guidance (for the PsycINFO search).

As in previous annual reviews of literature (eg Arbona, 2000b; Young & Chen, 1999) we were forced to place a initial limitations on the free course of our review while simultaneously being genuine to our goal of providing readers with an informative, useful, integrative review of last year's publications. forward the basis of these somewhat competing factors, we decided to focus our review forward articles, chapters, and books that have direct relevance to the primary work in which career counselors and vocational psychologists are routinely engaged. As a ensue several of the topics traditionally germane to the fields of industrial/organizational psychology human resources, and personnel psychology are not summarized in this review. Included in the list of topics that are not disguiseed are executive coaching, organizational change, career plateaus, sexual harassment and sex discrimination in the workplace, piece of work stress, job burnout, job/work/career satisfaction, absenteeism, career management, organizational mentoring, wo rkplace adjustment, career/organizational commitment, employee productivity, attitudes toward affirmative action, piece of work performance evaluations and appraisals, and employee selection.

Although we initially planned to include publications that addressed career disclosure programs in the workplace and the rising interest in corporate career center space limitations deterr us from doing for a like reason Also because of space restrictions, we chose not to summarize literature that addressed the career evolution of people in specific occupational categories (eg academy psychologists, speech-language pathologists) or topics more central to vocational education than career counseling. As a matter of professional rigor, we also made the decision not to include articles published in non-refereed periodicals or magazines despite their potential relevance to the practice and research of career counseling and unravelling Also not included in this review are books--both popular pres parts and textbooks--that are written for the primary intention of helping people explore general career options or obtain information about specific careers. in the same state or condition resources are often included in the National Career progressive growth Association's annual listing of circulating career literature published yearly in The Career progressive growth Quarterly.

As in last year's annual review (Arbona, 2000b) we decided not to begin the proces of gathering and evaluating relevant publications with a preconceived notion of for what reason we would organize the literature we engagemented Instead, we allowed an organization to rise into view from our review of each publication. It is our confidence that the structure and satisfied of this annual review provides readers with a useful summary of information and an overview of important resources central to the practice of career counseling and development
