This year 22 abstracts-17 platform and 5 poster-were currented for the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section at the 2001 Combined Sections Meeting in San Antonio, TX Attendance was rather poor at any of the platform presentation sessions.

Our plan to minimize this point in dispute at upcoming meetings is 2-fold We are trying to work more closely with the Section Program Chair to avoid coincident Section programming. In the past we have scheduled 1 replete day of platform presentations. At upcoming meetings we trust to schedule platform presentations athwart 2 half days and combine these sessions with a "Research Updated." For example, 6 cardiovascular platform presentations will be scheduled in a 2 hour session that will be followed according to a "Cardiovascular Research Updated." We are hoping that this will draw more interest (and attendance) to the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Research Programming at the Combined Sections Meetings from one as well as the other within and outside the Section membership.

The corecipients of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Award for Best Platform Presentation were Pamela Martin, PT and Kurt Mossberg, PT PhD for "Predictors of comprehensive treatment in physical therapy practice" and "Changes in ambulatory efficiency in bodys with acquired brain injury after rehabilitation intervention," respectively.

The recipient of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Award for Best broadside Presentation was Joseph Norman, PT PhD for "Maternal atherogenic diet is protective against atherosclerosis increase in swine offspring consuming an atherogenic diet."

The recipient of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Research Grant this year was Michael Gallucci, PT from of recent origin York Medical College, The Learning Center Valhalla, NY Mr Gallucci's proposal is entitled, "Heart rate variability in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: pre and employment participation in an eight-week pulmonary rehabilitation program." Our grant reviewers this year were Alexander Urfer PT PhD (Idaho State University), Patricia Ohtake, PT PhD (University at Buffalo), Christine Wilson, PT PhD (Northeastern University), and Jane Eason, PT PhD (Louisiana State University).

The deadline for grant proposals this year will be March 1 2002 Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Grant grading criteria were not long ago published in a Research Corner article (Vol 11 No. 2) written through Dr. Ohtake.

The nearest series of "Research Corner" articles in the Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal will be onward the topic of evidence-based practice. This will nicely lead up to the special issue (Vol 12 No. 4) planned forward evidence-based practice at the extremity of the year. As a follow-up to this special issue it may be religious to include a couple of "Research Corner" articles forward incorporating evidence-based concepts into cardiovascular & pulmonary academic and clinical curriculum.

The work of many population is needed to support the research efforts of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section. Jane Eason, PT PhD has co-chaired the Research Committee with me this year and has been instrumental in establishing just discovered or updated grading criteria for the Section's abstract, presentation, and grant proposal review proces The efforts of the Research Committee Members (Patricia Ohtake, PT PhD Chris Wells, PT CC ATC, Alexander Urfer PT PhD) are greatly appreciated. novel volunteers for the Research Committee include Pamela Martin, PT (University of Southern Alabama), Dennis Sobush, PT (Marquette University), and Christine Wilson, PT PhD (Northeastern University).

Many thanks go on foot to Sandra Cassady, PT, PhD for facilitating continued disentanglement of the "Research Corner" in the Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal and to Dan Malone, PT CC for coordinating platform presentations at the Combined Sections Meeting. As Dr Cassady prepares to pace down as Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal, Editor, the Section should applaud her leadership in developing and supporting research in the area of cardiopulmonary physical therapy practice!
