This Linda Crane Lectureship was at handed at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in Boston upon February 21, 2002.

Let me start through thanking my colleagues in the Section for providing me this opportunity to climb up upon the soapbox. Let me also thank all of you for coming. This honor bespeaks the somebody for whom it was named, Linda Crane, and I am honored.

I got a newly come email, you know the singles with the multiple funny one-liners in them and I rest one that was so appropriate for this situation. The definition of a conference-the confusion of undivided person multiplied by the number of population present. We will see?

I am going to diverge from the previous lecturer themes, which were dedicated to our friend and colleague, Linda Crane. I do this with more [i]or[/i] less trepidation, as I know there is more to say about her life moreover I think she would want us to actuate to another theme. She was diverting and shy that way. I will not bind you to your seats for a put offed period as I discovered something quite extraordinary while preparing this dialect I went to the library and base a text entitled the Greatest American Speeches. I fancy wow, maybe I can find a certain number of clever quotes or learn about tidbits about constructing a language that would leave a positive impression forward my colleagues. I chose the title Caring almost immediately concerning receiving the news that I was going to be the nearest Linda Crane lecturer. I contemplation for less than 2 days and it came to me Whenever I notion about Linda during my interactions with her and during her illness and after her passing, I always cogitation about how much she cared for everyone and everything. Of course, then I went to the dictionary and build that caring is "to have or point out regard, interest, or concern as respecting a certain quantity of person, thing, or event."2 I also originate it meant solicitude, personal business for another. I just couldn't reconcile the seasons health care with health solicitude. in succession the other hand, why did in the greatest degree of us strive to become physical therapists? To help others! Linda strove to help others. Then reasonable and behold, I got a literal meaning in my email from the APTA President, Ben Massey, in which he stated that the APTA's slogan for 2002 is the Science of Healing and the Art of Caring. I read this several times and discussed it briefly with myself. Ye I talk to myself quite often I find as I age that it helps me to remember and as my close examiners at North Georgia College know I ne an help remembering now and then. The Science of Healing and the Art of Caring. I conceit this is odd. Is caring an art? When I began work upon this lecture, I was interrupted by dint of the horror of September 11th This was caring at the in the greatest degree fundamental level with a national validity I reflected and found I couldn't reconcile caring as an art. Those heroes, survivors, and martyrs alike, cared. They didn't mix it with anything other which required artistry they just felt and did what they could Many cared to a even of ultimate sacrifice. So I changed the slogan in my mind. have knowledge of it on; it works better for me the art of healing within science and caring. This is really what physical therapists are capable of and transmit to our clients. Our artistic ability to mix science and caring may be the reason that in like manner many of our clinical trials are mystifyed by the 50% placebo power The simple act of caring has a skilled healing quality.

So what am I going to talk in this way briefly to you about? Well I want to relate caring to 3 areas. First, a little about the Section and the population who have cared enough to make it go on foot and have seen it to this point. other a lot about our health care connected view and our role as physical therapists and Section members in it. A little gaze at our future will be included in this part, and lastly, a chance about some potential solutions. I waiting under the possibility of fulfilment you enjoy this as a great deal as I have enjoyed putting it together.

So briefly, in what way did this Section come to be and who has cared for us up to now? Well in 1975 a woman through the name of May Watros made a motion to the House of Delegates to form the Cardiopulmonary Section. I recall from a remarkably brief conversation with her (les than 5 minutes), that her primary impetus for forming the Section was that she feared that inhalation therapists were going to take away the part of physical therapists in treating patients with pulmonary complications. She had more [i]or[/i] less training as a physiotherapist and knew the value and use for a suitable chest physical therapy program. My apologies to you May, moreover we have been unable to convince our colleagues or the health administrators that working with critically ill patients was as important or rewarding as working in an outpatient orthopedic clinic with athletes and doctors. if it were not that I will talk more about that later. She left the Section with 25 members and a National Association that really didn't know what a clinical section was all about and a section chairman who knew on a level less. What a great time we had meeting therapists from all from one side of to the other the United States and talking and developing strategies for advancing cardiopulmonary physical therapy in the futurity Little did we envision the changes that were about to present itself in the Association, the Section, and National Health.
