Evidence-based practice is having an increasing impact upon the profession of physical therapy. Evidence-based practice is the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values.' The incorporation of these 3 ingredients into the patient care plan facilitates the unravelling of a diagnostic and therapeutic partnership that optimizes clinical issues and quality of life.1 Utilizing an evidence-based practice approach to make clinical decisions requires the judicious use of research evidence. Sackett and colleagues define best evidence as clinically relevant research, many times from the basic sciences, on the contrary especially from patient-centered clinical research, into the accuracy and precision of diagnostic proofs the power of prognostic markers, and the efficacy and safety of therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventative regimens. Although patient-centered research is usually the most numerous appropriate evidence for informing practice, the contribution of evidence from basic science research should not be disregarded. Basic science research oftentimes uses animal studies to investigate therapeutic interventions related to physical therapy. This on a level of evidence resides at the base of the pyramid of evidence (Figure 1) providing information that may not be immediately applicable to practice, as compared to randomized controll trials and systematic reviews, which are at the top of the pyramid and provide the strongest greatest in number relevant evidence to inform practice. Despite its limitations, basic science research continues to furnish information that significantly impacts the practice of physical therapy. In reply to the urgent necessity to substantiate the efficacy of passing from hand to hand practice, the American Physical Therapy Association unfolded a Clinical Research Agenda.2 The main focus of the Clinical Research Agenda is to enhance the physical therapy material part of knowledge with systematic research into the effectiveness of interventions. Specifically, this agenda was designed to support, explain, and enhance physical therapy clinical practice through facilitating research that is primarily useful to clinicians. To accomplish this objective, the profession must continue to support and facilitate high quality clinical research trials designed to determine the usefulness of specific therapeutic interventions. Despite the critical ne for patient-centered research, it is essential that evidence derived from basic science research not be overseeed In fact, the goals of the Clinical Research Agenda to support, explain, and enhance physical therapy clinical practice can be partially achieved with basic science research.

The use of basic science research in the substantiation of now passing practice differs from its traditional part of generating new interventions.
