Purpose/Hypothesis: Neither the ventilalory muscle potency (VMS) nor chest wall excursion (CWE) of Colombian men and women has been previously reported. Because of this as well as the possible influence of high altitude, different material part habitus, and the lack of instrumentation in Colombia to measure VM we sought to measure VM and CWE to establish normal values and attempt to predict the VM of Colombian populace via CWE measurements. Number of Subjects: VM was measured with a Dwyer digital manometer in a convenience sample of 16 healthy Colombian make liables {7 men and 9 women; mean age = 44+10 (range = 25-67)) comfortably seated using the manners described by Black and Hyatt to acquire maximal inspiratory and expiratory influences (MIP and MEP, respectively). Materials/Methods: The VM measurements were then compared to the measurements reported from Black and Hyatt. CWE was measured with a tape measure placed at couple anatomical landmarks (xyphoid process and umbilicus) during vital capacity breathing from residual contortion to total lung capacity in a seated position. Results: lnlraraler reliability of the VM and CWE measurements were prime {ICC (1,1) range of 087-099} and the VM measurements were consistently lower than those reported by means of Black and Hyatt (MIP was 85% and MEP was 52% of predicted values). VM was significantly related to age and sex (p E Hernandez1, S Collins', L Cahalin1.
