Purpose/Hypothesis: The plan of this study was to determine the difference in velocity required to maintain target heart rate for a time period sufficient to address cardiorespiratory fitness during forward and backward walking. The hypothesis of this reflection was that there would be no difference in the velocity necessary to maintain target heart rate during backward and forward walking at a 5% incline for a time period of twenty minutes. Number of Subjects: 12 Materials/Methods: Heart rate was assessed before and after each of pair trials with a Polar heart rate monitor A5, and was monitored everywhere both the backward and forward walking trials at a 5% incline onward a Biodex RTM 500 treadmill. The velocity required to maintain heart rate within target range was recorded each minute for the duration of the application of mind for data analysis. Results: Using an [alpha] = 005 a significant difference (p=0000) was demonstrated between the average forward (411 mph)and backward (299 mph) walking get ons analyzed for all subjects. Additionally, a significant forward (430 mph male, 392 mph female) and backward velocity (319 mph male, 279 mph female) difference (p=0000) was demonstrated within each sex but this difference was not observ for forward walking when analyzed between sexs However, differences were found in the backward walking get ons between males (3.19mph) and females (2794mph) (p=0036) Rates of perceived exertion were not base to be significantly different for any of these form into groups analyses. Conclusions: This study has helped to establish the relationship between target heart rate and backward walking as compared to forward walking. The arises of this study have shown that there is a significant difference in velocity when backward walking versus forward walking, while maintaining target heart rate. however there is no significant change in perceived exertion. This research did not, however, address the possibility that the novelty of backward walking alone causes the decrease in necessary spe Further research is indicated to determine if training in backward walking decreases the difference in spe required to maintain target heart rate as compared to forward walking. Clinical Relevance: These findings, along with conclusions from other studies which advocate the orthopedic benefits of backward walking, further forward the use of backward walking as an effective way to address aerobic fitness during rehabilitation of lower extremity injuries.
