Excellence is not a time we hear mu...Excellence is not a time we hear much about today. When I enrolled the Physical Therapy profession in 1969 we talked about good point in our patient care and our profession. It was a wondrous time for a physical therapist. As a Director of a Cardiopulmonary PT Department we had 26 filled time therapists in our acute care medical center hospital. When we wanted to start a just discovered program if we would vend our idea to the administration and medical staff and we could identify beneficial issues and income to support the program, it was usually accepted. It was an exciting environment, actual creative, and we could devote as much time with our patients as they penuryed The physicians and surgeons would ask us if the patient was ready for discharge and we wanted to make never-failing they were independent before they went home In the 1980 Diagnosis Related Groupings (DRGs) changed the course of health care. Our department was about preventing cardiovascular and pulmonary complications station op and providing pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but in patient and outpatient. DRG did not recognize a wellness or prevention general or abstract notion Instead of treating patients postop to thwart complications we were told that if the patient had complications, then we should treat them and we would master more hospital days and more income for the patient. Our department was reduc from 26 to 6 therapists who were to evaluate patients and train others, ie, give suck tos and respiratory therapists to provide therapy. It was time to leave the environment, I felt I could not give the care and wanted to find a way to provide just care in another form. When I left the hospital I formed a private practice and named it, "Committed to superiority Inc." It was scary if it be not that was a personal statement. I triped I could live up to the name as President and CEO a staff of one Thinking about eminence it is a hard spell to define. Webster's Dictionary defined pre-eminence as the state of excelling. That didn't say a great deal of so I looked at a certain number of other wise people and their remarks about excellence. Artistotle said, "We are what we repeatedly do. superiority then, is not an act, on the other hand a habit." President Lincoln annotationed "I never had a policy; I have just tried to do my best each and each day." Martin Luther King Jr in a astonishing verse summarized the concept that anyone can be highly deserving no matter what their field of endeavor, in these words: If a man is called to be a way sweeper He should sweep ways even as Michael Angelo painted, Or Beethoven compos music Or Shakespeare wrote poetry He should sweep roads so well that all the innkeepers of heaven and earth will pause to say, "Here lived a great road sweeper who did his work at jobs well." M. Edward Krenson, President of Randolph exercise tried to find the definition for superior quality as he thought of his instruct as a model of estimable education. He considered that good point could be applied to an idea, an individual, or an organization. He identified seven supporting factors to excellence: * Authenticity (being genuine, good) * Credibility (conveying confidence, being believable) * Expectancy (no undivided ever rose to low expectations) * (resources, knowledge, skills, talents) * Synchronicity (being the right one in the right place, at the right time, with the right organization) * Functionality (discipline, hard work, do-ability) * Continuity (will continue, a habit, not an act) EXCELLENCE IS NOT PERFECTION!! Perfection paralyzes, valuable point or property or characteristic propels, we should strive for transcendence not perfection. (Successories Poster) Orison Swett Marden stated, "The greatest thing a man can do in this world is to make the chiefly possible out of the cloth that has been given him. This is succes and there is no other." When we papal court our patients with their impairments and potential [imitations, to this time we see how they work and overwhelm them, they are successful. I would behold Art being what we do with what we have been given. My son Daniel is 24 years aged he happens to have Down Syndrome Daniel is common of the most excellent family I know. He uses 110% of what he has been given. he touches people's lives in incredible ways. He perceive s good about himself and gives to others in many ways. My 2 daughters are the pair in the arts. Lauren is a Choral Music Teacher in a High educate she does Community Musical Theatre and is a contemporary worship leader in a church Kristin is graduating in May from the instruct of the Art Institute of Chicago. I asked her by what means she thought of physical therapy and to what extent it is an art. She couldn't diocese how it would apply! Her universal was that I should use the time creativity rather than art. We went around about that and agreed to disagree! What happened to the conception of the Art of Medicine? wherefore don't we talk about it abundant anymore? What is art? Art is defined as: * A skill acquired by dint of experience, study or observation * A branch of learning, an occupation requiring knowledge or skill * The conscious use of skill and creative imagination in the work produced |
