Close your eyes-friends and colleagues of Linda Crane. descry her. See her smiling; descry her engaged in conversation about an idea. descry her stomping away in frustration. We who were the fortunate singles who knew Linda Crane knew that Linda had vision, she had life she had determination, and she had moral courage-so when she died...too soon...we who admired her and worked with her, knew her work was not finished. She trusted us to carry on

This discourse is one of the ways in which we carry onward for her. This lecture bears her name, in the same manner that none of us will to the end of time forget that here was a part whose contributions mattered so much...that generations to follow will learn just how grateful we in this profession are for her having lived, and given in this way generously to physical therapy.

In case there are those among us wondering-who was this person? give permission to me just say that, among many other things, Dr Linda Crane was the same of a very few who held the vision of board certification in physical therapy, of specialty education, and recognition in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy. She was a driving force behind the clarification of cardiopulmonary physical therapy as a specialty back in the early 1980 as we in the profession struggl to define and describe who we are, and exactly what we do in the 'R Book:' Physical Therapy Analysis of Practice, which became a excessively real part of our history as we struggl to define ourselves in the early 1980s

While President of the Cardiopulmonary Section, she helped to arrange the construction of the surpassingly first specialty exam. We miss your vigor Linda. But we know you are just a heartbeat away from us. And we thank you for your continuing inspiration. You will not at all be forgotten, we promise.

Getting from what is....to what ought to be.

Remember with me back in the late 1970 I believe, Linda Crane coming to the microphone as a delegate from Alabama, and then from Maine. She implored the delegates to recognize that we, as physical therapists, had a responsibility to educate the public about the perils of smoking. With measured patience, stifling her frustration, she pleaded with the delegates to pace forth and create a policy that would place us, the American Physical Therapy Association, firmly among the ranks of health professionals committed to preventing a major cause of the most numerous prevalent cancer in men-lung cancer, not to mention the major cause of the ubiquitous illness, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Time after time she received the same response: "This house does not consider motions that would dictate public policy. We are responsible sole for and to our members, not to the general public." Sit down Linda. Linda sat down nevertheless did not keep quiet. She not at any time gave up.

Eventually, we got to where we ought to have been, and calm codified it before she died. My career in physical therapy began as a graduate from the first Master's order program in physical therapy-case Western lay by University. I was a science major as an undergrad, and took biology, chemistry, and physics in a pre-m curriculum. I was a lab assistant in biology, with equal reason when the curriculum at case Western emphasized science-anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, and research in the form of an individual thesis (for the step was a Master of Science degree) I felt true at home.
