Lung turn reduction surgery (LVRS) has been a "hot topic" since the mid-1990s. The popularity of this measure led to the landmark NETT trial, which not no other than examined this surgery in a tightly-controlled inquiry funded by Medicare, but also established pulmonary rehabilitation as standard medical treatment for emphysema. Unfortunately, it has been difficult to recruit adequate numbers of controls into the NETT and other trials to make definitive conclusions regarding the effectiveness of LVR In this research the authors pooled data from sum of two units well-controlled clinical trials, one in Canada and individual in Massachusetts. This pooling was necessary to have a sample size that would allow appropriate statistical analysis. The primary findings indicate that for patients with primarily upper lobe emphysema without CO2 retention, LVR provides better issues in quality of life, lung function and 6-minute walk distance 6 month abroad compared to medical management alone.
