The latter focus on evidence-based ...

The latter focus on evidence-based practice has had a positive influence onward clinical practice. The increase in number of well done quantitative research studies has helped to answer clinical questions as it was as whether one intervention is better than another and through how much. However, much of the practice of medicine and physical therapy is more than a science, it is also an art. For a certain number of clinical questions, qualitative research is a better or complimentary approach for obtaining information.

If we accept the principles underlying the scientific modus operandi the natural response is to consider quantitative research as objective and qualitative research as subjective. Quantitative research and evidence-based practice anticipates an underlying belief in the nerve of the scientific method and an acceptance that the deductive proces is the ideal system for determining best practice. Qualitative research, using the inductive proces should not be considered a less source of evidence on which to base clinical care. Rather, qualitative research provides a different emblem of evidence, designed to answer clinically relevant questions that cannot be answered with numbers alone. Despite the reputation that qualitative research is fine science, readers of the medical literature should know that there are standards for the completion and reporting of qualitative findings. This article will provide an overview of qualitative research rules which will help physical therapists evaluate the might of the evidence provided on qualitative research studies.

STUDY view

Qualitative researchers search for answers beyond numbers; they ask to understand behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs. They put to proof to "study things in their natural setting, attempting to make mind of, or interpret, phenomena in times of the meanings people bring to them."1 For example, we may want to know on what account people do not wear oxygen as prescribed. Qualitative research would court to explore this phenomenon and understand the experience of those individuals who wear oxygen In addition, the goal of qualitative research is to generate of the present day ideas that will provide fresh research questions and lines of inquiry. While quantitative research starts with a hypothesis to be experimented qualitative research begins with an intent to explore a certain area. Qualitative research generates ideas and hypotheses between the sides of methods that capture people's experiences. In this regard, qualitative modus operandis are valuable as a preliminary research arrangement from which further qualitative or quantitative studies can be defined. In summary, when the intent is to make sensation of, or interpret events, then qualitative research can provide valuable information in succession which to base clinical decisions.

RESEARCH STRATEGIES

In one as well as the other quantitative and qualitative research, classifications must be consistent with the plan of the research. Since the intent of qualitative research is self-same different than quantitative research, different research systems are needed. Domholdt states that, "The assumptions that form the basis for the qualitative paradigm are antithetical to the assumptions of the quantitative paradigm." Five basic assumptions of the qualitative paradigm are neared in Table 1.2 Quantitative research starts with a testable hypothesis. Qualitative research questions, in succession the other hand, evolve and change as ideas are generated, meditateed upon, and refined. The might of quantitative research is the ability to master the same results with repeated testing (reliability). In contrast, the vigor of good qualitative research is the ability to advance as close as possible to the fact of a situation (validity).3

There are several theoretical perspectives that provide a foundation for qualitative research. Since these perspectives heavily guide qualitative research orders they should be acknowledged. These theoretical perspectives have been bring to maturityed and utilized extensively in the fields of cultural anthropology, sociology, and psychology couple of the most common perspectives are naturalism and relativism.4 Naturalism indicates that behaviors should be understood in an everyday words immediately preceding or following For example, evaluating patients' ability to perform a dwelling exercise program in a clinical setting may not accurately describe their ability to perform exercise in the domicile setting. Relativism indicates that different population will have different perspectives about the same situation. Qualitative research explicitly acknowledges these differences and try to gets to understand them from an appropriate vantage point. For example, a patient and therapist may not have the same interpretation of a given situation.

There are a number of qualitative research designs or strategies used to aggregate data. As with quantitative research, all qualitative research should specify the question to be answered. The courses should be consistent with the research question, the intent of the research, and the underlying theoretical perspective. For example, an exploratory close attention with the intent of generating a of the present day theory would utilize different meanss than a study designed to examine the experiences of a dispose of individuals with a specific disease condition.
