Dear section Members: As we wrap up...

Dear section Members:

As we wrap up the year 2003 I find myself re-assessing my personal and professional 'to do' lists, reconsidering priorities, and wondering about novel opportunities that always seem to quick in emergencies themselves at the start of a strange year. Naturally this period of reflection includes conceits about the immediate and long-term coming events of the section.

This year has brought with it several challenges for us. The most numerous concerning of these is financial. For the first time in newly come memory we lost money in succession basic programming from the 2003 Combined sections Meeting. This los is attributable to a lack of member attendance and excessive audiovisual outlays Fortunately we were able to counterpart our revenue stream with our preconference workshop profits, however we were still short of our overall projections.

You can imagine that the section Board was dismayed at these eventuates Added to this situation is an anticipated development of our travel budget as our activism in legislative and reimbursement issues increases at the national even However, I'm pleased to make known you that we have picked ourselves back up and started to direct the eye at this situation as an opportunity rather than a setback. This reversal of perspective will be fueling our strategic planning meeting in February, 2004 The agenda for that meeting will include a reassessment of the quality and quantity of services we provide to members, as well as evolution of priorities for legislative and regulatory activism, practice and research.

At the conclusion of that meeting we will have near answers to the following questions about each item:

* Where do we want to be in 1 year? 3 years?

* What activities will we have to engage in to achieve there? How will we prioritize these activities?

* What arc we popularly doing that will help us achieve our goals?

* What should we do differently to help us achieve our goals?

* What resources will it take for us to achieve our goals?

How will we obtain those resources?

I have kept your feedback from the last membership meeting and will be soliciting more before our strategic planning meeting in February. The section listserv is another opportunity for this conversation; please take advantage of it.
