Greetings and welcome to summer! I think it is safe to say that my next to the first term in office is already moving at warp speed!! The Section Board has been incredibly productive since the Christmas holidays. In addition to the regular activities for which each committee is responsible we have engaged in 3 solution projects that I believe will fix the tone for the section's future:

* selection of a professional company to redesign and manage our website;

* reassessment of the intents and value of our Dance at Combined Sections Meeting; and,

* evolution of a new strategic plan.

Each of these casts has required highly concentrated time and commitment, as well as a willingness to take risks, from each member of the Board. As you read in succession I believe you will be pleased with our accomplishments to date.

First, the website. We have been fortunate for several years now that single volunteer, Diane Madras, PT, PhD has devot her time to learning basic website design and management skills in order to help the Section take advantage of this communication medium. Diane be entitled tos an enthusiastic round of applause for her solo efforts!! As our emergencys have grown, however, so have the demands forward the website's functionality. During our discussion of the site's subsequent time uses we identified numerous interactive features that require considerable expertise in web design. Electronic voting and bylaws changes, online purchasing of manuals and compendia, members barely access to the latest practice and reimbursement information, and web based continuing education offerings are just a scarcely any of ideas that we intend to implement above time. With that in mind we solicited proposals from four website design companies. We also determined that a sophisticated website requires an appropriate financial investment that outdos our regular operating budget. Following discussion at the two our board and membership meetings at CSM we agreed to use hold funds to make this strange website a reality. Stay large quantityed for the next update at PT2004 in Chicago.

The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Dance for Research has a protracted and successful history at the Combined sections Meeting. Many populace were surprised, therefore, when we did not stage the marked occurrence in Nashville this year. The decision was a budgetary one: we anticipated difficulty covering our outlays with the Vince Gill and Amy Grant plan planned for the same evening. This change in our routine, however, provided us with an opportunity to re-evaluate to what degree and why we host the dance each year. Participants at the Section Membership Meeting made it clear that the Dance is valued for the visibility it gives the Section as well as for the financial support it provides to the one and the other our Section Research Grant and the Foundation for Physical Therapy. In addition, common member noted that the Dance is consistent with our mission as it excites cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness! As a conclusion of this discussion we agreed that we will implement cost-reduction strategies for what may occur hereafter Dances and also consider alternative circumstances we might add to our list. We also want to hear from members who were not a part of the discussion at CSM to render certain that we are investing our resources in line with your expectations. Please email me (djvewell@vcu.edu) or speak to me at PT 2004 about your studys on this issue.

Last on the other hand definitely not least, we have been working onward our strategic plan. Ideally, strategic planning is waysed over the course of 1 to 2 retireed days so that the dispose can focus on the issues without interruption. Our budgetary and time constraints, however, require us to perform this task in smaller stairs We started with an additional 3-hour planning meeting at CSM during which we:

* reviewed of our mission, vision, and values to assure that they are aligned with APIA Vision 2020;

* performed a SWOT analysis to evaluate our general and future environment and resources; and,

* drafted a preliminary station of long-term goals.

We have committed ourselves to continue this work at a distance via email and interview call in order to maintain our moment and have a product to part out to you at CSM 2005 in of the present day Orleans. Our success with this task will be possible because of the dedication of your offer leaders. Each Board member, like you, is juggling daily work routines, professional produce opportunities, family commitments, and time for self Please be strong to offer a word of thanks or encouragement to them whenever you have the chance. I know I couldn't do this piece of work without them.

See you in Chicago!!!

Respectfully submitted,
