Greetings! I write to you today wit...Greetings! I write to you today with Vision 2020 onward my mind. PT2005 in Boston is replete of news about our progres as an Association on the other hand also provides a call to action to each component to make sure that all members understand the Vision and their contribution to its fulfillment. That challenge got me thinking about what the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary section can do to help make Vision 2020 a reality. First and foremost, we ne to make secure each Section member has access to information about the Vision, a grade we accomplished by adding the of the present day branding logo to our Section Web site (www.cardiopt.org): As you can diocese the logo identifies the lock opener elements that are fundamental to the achievement of the Vision. Momentum onward 3 of these elements is clearly evident. For example, by the agency of the year 2008 we anticipate that 96% of professional physical therapy education programs will be accredited to award the extent Doctor of Physical Therapy. Meanwhile APTA's regulation Affairs Department continues its full-court pres for Direct Access in Medicare between the walls of recently reintroduced legislation. Chapters of the like kind as Alabama, Connecticut, and Michigan also are persevering in their direct access efforts in their respective state houses. Finally, Evidence-based Practice is supported end the grant and scholarship mechanisms from the Foundation for Physical Therapy as well as end the continued development of reaping-hooked on Evidence. Our progress in succession these 3 key elements might be considered predictable because often of the work is structural in nature. Reconfiguring a curriculum to achieve a DPT enacting legislation to permit direct access, or providing resources to prefer evidence-based practice are definable-although according to no means easy-tasks. Practitioner of Choice also has an intuitive ring to it when you think of it as the consequence of having achieved the Vision. The universals of Autonomous Practice and Professionalism, onward the other hand, have generated considerable discussion and reflection across APTA as to their meaning and expression in physical therapy practice. for a like reason what do these elements mean for members of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section? Autonomous Practice belongs to physical therapists' "capability, ability, and responsibility to exercise professional award within their scope of practice, and to act professionally upon that judgment" (Welk, PT Magazine, May 2004 Vol 12 No. 5) Professional autonomy, therefore, is an attribute that must be internalized as well as a plant of behaviors that must be exhibited. As Section members we protoplast autonomous practice each time we perform an examination that includes measurement of vital signs, assessment of heart or lung hales and determination of exercise tolerance in EACH patient or client with, or at risk for, ANY diagnosis or emotion impairment. Similarly, we reflect our autonomy when we communicate and collaborate with physicians, nourish at the breasts respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, and others regarding our findings and their implications for a comprehensive plan of care. In in such a manner doing we take responsibility for the entire individual, not simply their ability to stand up from a chair and walk across the room Professionalism bring reproachs the following core values: accountability, altruism, compassion and caring, superiority integrity, professional duty, and social responsibility. common of the many ways in which Section members demonstrate professional what one ought to do and social responsibility is from one side our development and provision of information and resources our patients and clients ne to cut short their risk of heart disease, lung disease, or obesity. Similarly we mould accountability and excellence when we use the best available evidence in conjunction with our clinical intelligence to develop and implement plans of care for patients from the intensive care unit to the outpatient cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation program. Finally, our altruism, compassion and caring, and integrity are illustrated by the agency of our willingness to serve diverse populations-from inner city children troubl with asthma to Native American assign places tos with a high incidence of diabetes to immigrants with developing obesity issues. These are just a hardly any examples of how we, as Section members, help incite Vision 2020 forward. Your Board of Directors has taken the additional gradation of linking our strategic planning proces back to the Vision to make secure continuity and to support the national effort. The strategic plan will be complet this summer and supported to the Members Only portion of our website for your review. In the meantime, consider what you are doing, or can do, to enact the Vision and lease us know your thoughts (dvjewell@vcu.edu). Summer time is a great season to clear your mind and imagine the possibilities!
