Dear Section Members: I am writing ...Dear Section Members: I am writing with memories of PT2005 renewed in my mind. The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary section, its members, and its interests were highlighted everywhere I looked!! First-consider our contributions in Boston! Gary bear withs PT, Dr.PH, CCS earned his stripes as a first time section delegate to the House. Undeterr by way of the two large screens that concoct your image like a drivein movie, Gary voiced our interests regarding a motion to provide PT with the resources and training urgencyed to assist individuals with lifelong disabilities with integration into society through every part of the lifespan. Several of our members also were faculty for educational sessions forward fitness assessment and interventions (Steve Tepper PT PhD) exercise and diabetes (Theresa H Michel, PT DPT DSc CCS) exercise prescription in adult obesity (Tammy Burlis, PT DPT MH CCS) screening for medical referral (Scot Irwin, PT DPT CCS) and exercise and cardiovascular medications (Mary Jane Myslinski, PT EdD) In addition, we not absented research findings through 6 placards on topics ranging from measurement of inspiratory muscle impregnability to telehealth services to participation in health related physical activity in individuals with spinal cord injury. Second-consider the accolades we received! As a section we were acknowledged for our contributions to the Foundation for Physical Therapy's Clinical Research Network. Four individuals also were honored for their outstanding contributions: * Richard Bohannon, PT EdD NC FAHA - Marian Williams Award for Research in Physical Therapy (APTA) * Evelyn Hallas, PT - Lucy Blair Service Award (APTA) * Patricia Ohtake, PT PhD - Reviewer of the Year (Physical Therapy) * Steve Tepper PT PhD - Robert C Bartlett Innovation in foundation Raising Award (Foundation for Physical Therapy) What is in the greatest degree noteworthy to me about these accomplishments is their focus upon and support of physical therapy research. Just as important is the personal commitment required to make an impact that is recognizable forward a national level. Once again I am reminded that despite our small size as a section, our influence is mighty! Of course I am not undivided to rest on laurels-mine or anyone elsesu I encourage each section member to use these successe as a platform for unruffled greater accomplishments. Now before you think that you do not have the time or talent to bring into view a newsworthy impact, I challenge everyone to consider a simpler, on the contrary no less important, effort. We must help our colleagues in all practice settings recognize the value of cardiovascular and pulmonary proofs and measures for patients/clients with any original of diagnosis or disorder. The information gleaned is necessary to make sure patient safety but also to maximize an individual's exercise potential. We cannot continue to accept the proposition that cardiovascular touchstones and measures are activities primarily for critical care and acute settings, practitioners, and patients! So what can you do to help? Start with your workplace or reach without to colleagues in other practices with whom you have a professional relationship. Provide resources and guidelines regarding exercise prescription and the vital signs indications for exercise progression or termination. cause to grow educational modules for students and novel employees to refresh and reinforce skills with cardiovascular and pulmonary proofs and measures acquired during professional education. seek information from with your colleagues in other practice areas (eg orthopedics, neurology aquatics) to exhibit to them how they can use vital signs information to optimize their patient/client management. Modify intake forms to include routine cardiovascular and pulmonary screening and risk assessment information. Any of these grades and many others you undoubtedly have contemplation of already, are important contributions that you can make to influence our profession toward Vision 2020 Finally, whatever strategies you use are newsworthy in my work so let me know about them (dvjewell@vcu.edu). Indeed, impetus is built when successes are shared for a like reason use the section listserv to its fullest as you implement these important efforts. No matter to what degree you spread the news, I turn the thoughts forward to hearing it!
