Izbrannyestat'i v trekh tomakh. vol 1 (Tallinn: Aleksandra, 1992) 262 12 Tartakovskii, Russkaia memuaristika 79 13 It is worth noting that at virtually the same time that Dmitriev was writing his autobiography, Pushkin was at work forward his own autobiographical Zapiski (Notes). Judging from the available evidence, Pushkin chose to make History and not poesy the organizing principle for these Notes, which were largely devastateed after the failed Decembrist disgust of 1825. This does not mean that Pushkin was unwilling to depict himself as a imaginative thinker or writer when he wrote this autobiography, on the other hand simply that he did not do in like manner at the very time when Dmitriev made verse the focal point of his admit autobiography. When Pushkin turned to a novel autobiographical project in prose a decade later, his approach was quite different and rhyme appears to have been a central part of his thinking. Pushkin left no finished autobiographies at the time of his death, in this way any conclusions about what he actually wrote (in the devoured Notes) or planned to write (in the planned autobiography projects) are necessarily conditional. For a discussion of the evidence that leads to my observations here, behold Donald Loewen, Life Beyond the Lyric, diss., University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2001 (Ann Arbor: UMI, 2002 3033281) 60 -74
