WASHINGTON -- Catching the industry through surprise, a House amendment in support of voluntary labeling of "slave-free" chocolate had Chocolate Manufacturers Association lobbyists working to derail the proposal at pres time. The proposal, a sentence-long amendment to an agriculture appropriations bill, allocates $250000 for the FDA "to disclose a label for chocolate produces that indicates that no child slave labor was used in the growing and harvesting of cocoa."
